Where does the enigmatic nymphalid butterfly genus Davidina belong in the tree of life? Sister to the genus Oeneis and Neominois! First described as a pierid, now we know what it actually is. Preprint by Vladimirs Lukhtanov and Dubatolov:

TheLepSoc I found this beautiful moth in the #Magaliesberg area, #SouthAfrica .

Argynnis paphia is one big butterfly of temperate forests which in Portugal is fairly limited to the northern half, avoiding mediterranean areas.
Males patrol glades and hedges looking for flowers to feed on, and females to mate with.

The Silver-washed Fritillary (Argynnis Paphia) is a vibrant and eye-catching butterfly but to me, its 'valesina' form has a much more subtle, almost ethereal beauty.

My Pentas have survived the winter so far, and this Giant Swallowtail couldn’t be more excited about it! He spent 20 minutes working each and every flower!

The Panther (Neurosigma siva, Limenitidinae, Nymphalidae), puddling on rodent remains from regurgitated owl pellets. Another species where there are no known life history records.
