🌟 Applauding Dr. Andrew Kerkhoff 🏆✨
Heartfelt congratulations on being honoured with the distinguished Stephen Lawn Prize at #UnionConf2023 . Your exceptional contributions to TB research and commitment to global lung health have left an indelible mark 👏 👏
Today live stream from the sofa, tomorrow The Union Conference to help end TB and #GetShitDone . Can't wait.
COVID-19 testing showed it is key to consider diagnostics in context, we need to apply this to #TB - e.g., urine-based TB testing even with moderate sensitivity can reach high diagnostic yield Claudia Denkinger McGill Global Health Programs Madhu Pai, MD, PhD #mcgillsummerinstitute

Thank you to over 150 online & in-person attendees and all course faculty!
Every single evidence correctly generated is important! Mikashmi Kohli FIND expertly articulates how evidence shapes global WHO policy on TB diagnostics Madhu Pai, MD, PhD McGill Global Health Programs #mcgillsummerinstitute
A less sensitive diagnostic test can still be very useful if it has sufficient yield and reaches a large population Tobi Broger making a case to consider the ‘real life’ yield of TB diagnostic tests McGill Global Health Programs #mcgillsummerinstitute #diagnosisforall FIND
You need a sample to do a diagnostic test.
Claudia Denkinger & team find that for TB testing of people with HIV, a urine sample is easier and safer to collect than a sputum sample. But the urine test is less sensitive. They suggest reporting diagnostic yield, sensitivity & specificity.
In this meta-analysis Tobi Broger et al. argue for broad use of urine lipoarabinomannan testing in people living with #HIV to diagnose #tuberculosis .
Sputum, the most widely used sample, is difficult to produce, while urine is readily available.

Diagnostic yield is more relevant than accuracy alone. Here is our article just published in

Congrats Tobi Broger on new paper in The Lancet Global Health 🌟In case we didn’t have enough yet - even more evidence to support using both AlereLAM and Sputum Xpert for TB diagnosis in HIV inpatients and outpatients thelancet.com/journals/langl…
New FujiLAM study published. Kudos to Epicentre_MSF and sites! Great comment by Bianca Sossen and Graeme Meintjes here: thelancet.com/journals/langl…
This should never happen again!

Claudia Denkinger Great! This would be a game changer for TB. Mostly for children but also bcs what we see in the field is that there are lots of poor quality sputum samples leading to waste of XPERT cartridges or delays in the diagnostic.
In severe HIV-associated TB, MTB bloodstream infection is common & bacilli load in blood is a key driver of high mortality. How quickly does TB clear from blood on treatment? Do MTBBSI dynamics relate to mortality? Our new paper in eBioMedicine – The Lancet Discovery Science
