Mechanical clocks, like this one on display in our Explorers gallery, were introduced into Japan by Jesuit missionaries in the 1500s or by Dutch merchants in the 1600s and were typically made of brass or iron.

: Japanese Sake Cups
These two beautiful and delicate cups were used for drinking sake (an alcoholic drink made by fermenting rice). They are made of gold lacquer over tortoiseshell with designs depicting Mount Fuji and are signed by the artist.

: Purple Heart Medal

On 18th June 1944, William Neilson Jr, acting sergeant of the 29th Division, advanced toward the town of St. Lô in France when he was shot in the right leg. He was rewarded with this Purple Heart, on display in our exhibition.

On display in our D-Day 80 , this is part of the uniform of the Women’s Royal Naval Service, commonly known as the Wrens. Although women were not part of combat units, they did do jobs previously reserved for men, like being mechanics.
