In 1963 Hatfield College of Technology established a digital computer unit. A suite of two rooms was set aside to house one computer, the Elliott 803. That year, the first computing course began with a first cohort of ten students, mostly women.

Thomas Plume's library included 52 astronomy books - the Royal Observatory was in his own parish. Missing from it was Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematic, possibly due to Newton's unconventional religious beliefs (Plume being devout). herts.ac.uk/uhpress/books-…

Swedish botanist, Peter Kalm, visited Ellis in 1748 to consult with him about his farming equipment and practices. He was disappointed to find that Ellis was neither a modern farmer, nor a particularly good one. The two men didn't like each other at all.
