The adoption of the first-ever resolution on the Rights of Intersex Persons at #HRC55 marks a landmark advancement in human rights. The U.S. proudly co-sponsored this initiative and extends its gratitude to Finland, South Africa, Chile, & Australia for leading this vital effort.

Today’s verdict on Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act undermines human rights and public health for all and poses grave threats to LGBTQI+ Ugandans and allies. Uganda’s international reputation and ability to increase foreign investment depend on equality under the law.

The ruling on Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act is dangerous and fails to protect LGBTQI+ people & allies. The provisions of the AHA that were not overturned threaten human rights and Uganda's reputation and economy. Uganda’s government must protect the dignity of all its citizens.

Carlos Fernandes led the first LGBTQI+ group in Angola, and tirelessly advocated for human rights & ending the threat of HIV/AIDS. Last week, he was found dead in his home. I join my colleagues and those in Angola and around the world in mourning this senseless loss.
