Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We can get to zero by demanding that governments design transportation systems to put safety first.

Last night, Vancouver police hit another pedestrian on E. Hastings while driving. The IIO is now investigating.

This comes just 2 weeks after a VPD officer pled guilty to an MVA charge in a similar incident. Previous story: www1.thetyee.ca/News/2024/05/1…

The exact location of last night's collision (12:30 a.m.) was Hastings and Dunlevy. I don't have info yet on the condition of the person who was hit. But it's always worth noting: this stretch of Hastings has a 30 km speed limit.

Seriously. The idea that the above is considered 'bike infrastructure' by our municipal politicians and planners is actually insulting.

Vancouver's 'Local Street Bikeways' are such a sad joke. This is totally typical -- totally unsuitable for encouraging mode shift and safe travel.

You can see a cyclist on the sidewalk on the right because the car there almost hit him while reversing to park.

Strongly encourage all Vancouver's leaders to read this thread. These things are possible, they don't need to take decades. Give space back to people and everybody benefits. Be bold, act with conviction, act urgently.

Notice the second strip of 'protective' paint along this stretch of the Lougheed Hwy in . Does this make you feel safe cyclists? (Obviously this space would be perfect for non-post concrete barriers City of Burnaby & BC Transportation )

All across metro Vancouver, city councils should be funding safe routes to school.

City of Vancouver spends just $750,000 a year on the school travel planning program, which splits the funds across 100 schools!

We need to do better.

The motion that passed in council, which we opposed, was for 2 vehicle lanes on Beach west of Denman (it's currently 1). This configuration now shows 3. It's becoming increasingly clear that very little thought was put into this plan.

with light crossing Oak eastbound at 10th Ave Bikeway comes within an ace of being broad-sided by northbound pickup on Oak turning right onto 10th Ave bikeway! Truck driver gets mad at cyclist. Starts honking! Very risky corner!

It's wild that you and ABC voted to approve this (and only this) without even knowing if there will be space for pedestrians 😕

As Lucy Maloney says, 'They've kept the absolute worst part of the plan & they've thrown out all the good parts.'

We remain disappointed by council's short-sighted decision to increase vehicle traffic & risk to pedestrians & cyclists, while eliminating climate adaptation plans.

A year ago, a pedestrian was killed at Columbia & Brunette in New Westminster. The mayor and the city promised change, but said it was 'complicated' and would take time. Yesterday, another person lost their life in the same spot. How much more time?

“Over 40 per cent of people in Metro Vancouver, for example, say they want to cycle more often, but don’t,” Jane said. “And for many of them, it’s because there is a lack of safe infrastructure near where they live, or near where they they need to go.”

An email from the city of Vancouver to a citizen about what’s being done about traffic violence. The answer? Studies, consultations and pilot projects.
