Today is my first day as Professor of Law at SOAS University of London, University of London. Sad leaving friends at Birkbeck, but grateful to have been welcomed so warmly by my lovely new colleagues at SOAS and to work alongside scholars I have known and admired for years. Here's to new beginnings.

Just over a week until the deadline to submit a zine idea for our zine fest!

Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis and there will be an optional online zine making workshop for anyone wanting more guidance on zines as a medium

So Cambridge management which is *all* about 'world beating standards' and top class academic rigour etc is getting ready to pass legislation that will allow graduation without work being marked by teaching staff. Only takes a second to drop all the high-mindedness.

A *lot* of UCU people are asking 'What should I do about stuff that suddenly has to happen next week?'

Hopefully we'll get some specific guidance from HQ soon but, till that arrives, there are a lot of reasonably safe decisions we can make on our own initiative,

the most important being: YOU ARE NOT EXPECTED TO SCRAMBLE LIKE A MANIAC TO RESTORE NORMALITY AT A MOMENT'S NOTICE.

We're still on ASoS, remember. ASoS categorically says don't do that. If you're working your hours, nobody can reasonably expect more.

A pay rise in line with inflation for ALL public sector workers would cost around an extra £12-15bn.

An annual 1.5% tax on any wealth above £5m would raise £16bn.

We can afford to give people a proper pay rise. The Tories' refusal to do so is a political choice.
