Ron DeSantis has now signed a bill into law that gets rid of local living wage laws in Florida cities.

The law also stops local governments from passing heat-protections for workers like water breaks and mandatory shade.

It also gets rid of predictable-scheduling laws.

Despicable. Ron Desantis has signed the bill banning heat protections for outdoor workers.

Last year, the first heat death reported to OSHA was January 1. That farm worker was killed in Florida. wfla.com/news/florida/d…

Worker misclassification facilitates this. And denial of overtime. And denial of unemployment. And workers comp. When it functions as a method of competition, I think antitrust agencies need to act. But at a basic, human level, this cannot be how we treat human beings in America.

All I can think about the guy who described working in 100 degree heat — with all the bottled water under lock and key. 34 people die every year from heat stroke in Miami-Dade County alone. This includes strong, young men in their 20s working construction.

The contractor on this job site was KAST Construction, a company that was fined several times last year for lack of fall safety protective measures for workers on their projects. Worker lives are precious. Workers deserve to be protected and prioritized. local10.com/news/local/202…

Only a week following the tragic loss of 6 construction workers in the Baltimore bridge collapse, we are grieving the loss of 27 year old construction worker and father to 2 young children Jorge de la Torre who died in a work accident on Thursday in Ft. Lauderdale.

It was an honor to support these workers by helping fill out their applications and assess their cases for immigration relief. Thank you to WeCount! for hosting this DALE clinic and for their zealous work building power for immigrant workers and families in South Florida.

Last week, AI Justice attorneys Cat Walker and Sarah Rosen joined WeCount! to provide legal assistance at their clinic for workers pursuing DALE: deferred action for participating in a case denouncing a labor violation.

Which is why this weekend WeCount! hosted an 10-Hour Safety Training in Little Havana to educate construction workers in on how to identify hazards and stay safe on the job, because all of us deserve to go to work and to return home alive.

Did you know that one construction worker dies every 4 days in and thousands more are injured every year due to falls, dangerous scaffolding, machinery accidents, electrocutions, and heat stress. 🧵
