Very exciting news that Florian Wilfling is the recipient of this year‘s Walther Flemming Award!
We are very happy that our newest postdoc colleague, Els, has recently started in the lab! She will be joining our team investigating degradation of nuclear pore complexes by autophagy, using expertise gained during her postdoc time with Christian Schlieker. Welcome Els 🎉🎉🎉
We spent three days in Staufen discussing science, exchanging insightful ideas, and having lots of fun! A big thank you to the The Wilfling Lab and Florian Wilfling! We are looking forward to next year's retreat!

Emily Boyle and Florian Wilfling discuss the diverse mechanisms for degradation of nuclear components by #autophagy across eukaryotes.
It‘s out on biorxiv!
Thanks to Oda H Schiøtz, Sven Klumpe, Dustin Reed Morado Matthias Pöge, Jonathan Schneider Florian Beck and Christopher Thompson for the productive work! Amazing colleagues, and Juergen M. Plitzko steadily supporting and enabling it all!

Glad to finally share our manuscript on “Serial Lift-Out” by the amazing twitterless Oda Schiøtz, Jürgen Plitzko, Christoph Kaiser , and myself. Doing multiple sections from single lift outs showing beautiful C. elegans ultrastructure 🤯 I could watch it all day 🤩How did we get there?
This was a fun challenge! empiar 11275, A full chlamydomonas cell. Looks so cool in 3D! I used a pre-trained UNet from @OrsDragonfly3D and trained it to classify 13 different classes. Quite a different challenge than my usual cryoET, but very worth it! SwuliusLab
Scientists Cristina Capitanio Anna Bieber from the Baumeister and Schulman labs at #MPIB , together with
Florian Wilfling from Max Planck Institute of Biophysics, released an amazing paper PNASNews about the membrane ultrastructure of #phagophores !

We are proud to welcome our new post-doc colleague, Javier Lizarrondo (Javier). He will use the tremendous structural biology skills from his Ph.D. at SPC Facility & Garcia-Alai Lab @EMBL Hamburg @EMBL to study membrane remodelling proteins involved in the generation of the phagophore. Welcome, Javier! 😄
Congratulations to The Wilfling Lab PhD student Pia Erdbrügger for receiving an Evangelische Studienwerk PhD fellowship funded by BMBF and also for being elected as First Representative for Severely Disabled Persons at Max Planck Institute of Biophysics! Both fantastic achievements 🎉
Our work on yeast autophagy biogenesis is out in PNAS:

In this study we present the membrane ultrastructure of #phagophores , their biophysical properties and the contact sites involved in their biogenesis, spearheaded by Cristina Capitanio and @Anna_bieber_ab.
In 2 weeks from now we'll start a new season of mito911 series! Join us with Florian Wilfling The Wilfling Lab to know more about #autophagy ! Aligning Science Across Parkinson’s michaeljfox.org
