Faced with what looked like a traffic disaster, the Greater London Council designed a system of three Ringways to handle the traffic and revitalize London's urban life. 478 miles of motorway were planned that would fundamentally transform London.

The Ringways were designed to help with traffic in the face of massively increasing numbers of cars. Planners projected another doubling of vehicles within 10 years, and a tripling within 20. Extreme measures would have to be taken.

London's lost motorways, the Ringways, were an ambitious plan in the 1960s to build 478 miles of motorway that would have radically reshaped the city. Though the plan ultimately failed, it left lasting social impacts (🧵)
