Important service update.

Delighted to see NHS England & Dr Navina Evans U-turn on their appalling decision to cut NHS Practitioner Health mental health support for hospital doctors.

The 16k responses to our open letter of protest were crystal clear - this service is vital & necessary.

Cut it at your peril. 1/2

Let’s hope I won’t have to type #FundNHSPracHealth again for another 12 months at least.

But will be ready to fight for this service in the future too.
I will be a consultant then (hopefully), and would want that my juniors & peers get the same support I got when I needed it.

People with severe mental illness are 3 x likelier to lose all their teeth and 2 x likelier to have oral cancer found late.

We need more research on how people working with this population can reverse the trend.

As a doctor who used the NHS practitioner health programme when I had a profound depression, I am astonished to think funding for this essential service is being cut.
I've signed this open letter to the Health Secretary & the NHS CEO.
It takes a few seconds.
It may save lives.

NHS Practitioner Health For me the service was supportive, responsive and I credit it with how quickly I recovered. I feel like the current agenda means people like me burning out and exiting the workforce would be preferable. But anyone with a shred of humanity would want to #FundNHSPracHealth

There are so many barriers to accessing support for one’s mental health as a doctor. But this one is huge.. the feeling you should be able to manage your health yourself as you are a doctor. It can be hard to ask for help and it’s therefore it’s even more important we can access…

It’s been one hell of a tough weekend for anyone who cares about the mental health of #NHS staff.

So if you are shocked, hurting, or angry at what NHS England have done to NHS Practitioner Health and those it seeks to care for… pls know that there is a growing army of activists - ready.

Withdrawing this key mental health service for doctors (who need to be well enough to provide same to our patients) - is an inexplicable decision.

Plainly put: I manage mental health services and need well doctors.
