Has tenancy law reform caused disinvestment in the rental market? Not so far, but maybe it should? …could encourage incompetent landlords to cash out of sector? Excellent new research by Chris Martin and colleagues. AHURI

Here's a quick thread about government, social housing and the lack of regulation to ensure tenants have some protection when housing management goes wrong. Because... well... there is a certain level of hypocrisy from current ministers which can't be left unaddressed

Appalled by news today of a pilot programme with GPs 'prescribing' heating for patients with health conditions likely to be made worse by cold and damp. Further medicalising poverty and loading problems onto the NHS because of the failure of other parts of the system. 1/7

I’ve been collaborating on this piece with ⁦Guardian Australia⁩ for months, and I could be more excited to have it out in the open. Please read and share to highlight the urgent need for better protections for renters (and you’ll understand my PhD topic) theguardian.com/australia-news…

Poor housing conditions kill. The inquest into the death of 2 year old Awaab Ishak told that he died through exposure to fungi. Cause of death, in part, down to ‘environmental mould pollution. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englan…

Lots to take from this morning's closing statements at the Grenfell Tower Inquiry, but this from Danny Friedman KC is probably worth sharing. The inquiry has shown a world absent empathy. As well as all the technical stuff, that needs to change

Some really interesting points about data collection for rental applications and the power imbalance in renting in Australia (and elsewhere)

What’s driving England’s housing crisis?

In part, it’s because we’re now a country of *multiple* home ownership and private renters.

In the last 20 years the proportion of adults owning multiple homes doubled, the %s of 16-34 y/os buying a home almost halved. 🏘️🧵

All housing tenures include some crap homes, but some tenures are far more likely to provide crap homes than others.

Incentives in the PRS are clearly broken, especially where homes are older. Landlords won't invest if benefits accrue to tenants who can't afford to pay more.
