An independent thinker in sport. Although the disciplines don't exist, I'm kind of a coaching anthropologist & biopsychosociologist.

In mental health awareness week, I reflect on the day I cried in frustration when someone I was supporting told me they had been prescribed a strong anti-psychotic drug without being told side-effects, exit strategy & without joined-up healthcare.

Thought my effort on Zwift Bologna’s TT course was spot on & even! But a few watts too much in heat meant I couldn’t maintain 180W in the end! Threshold isn’t only metabolic!

This was a 'scary' read. Mental Health is a biopsychosocial construct in which Performance Directors & Coaches can have a profound influence on it. This paper appears to suggest that some PD's need to work on understanding that influence.

The demands of working with an Olympian & a young athlete are very different. However, I’d argue that it often requires a broader skill-set for the latter. This is not recognised in coach development structures.

For those of us who believe we are evidence-based practitioners, think very carefully before promoting Mental Health Awareness Week. ‘Awareness’ as a thing is based on contested & questionable evidence.

Used a few Prof Sarah-Jayne Blakemore videos & a reading in my lectures on long term athlete development. Today, a student told me it transformed the way he saw & interacted with teenagers in his coaching. That’s impact!

I am an eternal optimist but when the results of a consultation wholly reflect the views of the person doing the consulting, I get annoyed! Leave the party or be an unruly guest?

This line made me think about a recent meeting I was in: 'when people do not have the information or evidence required to converse about a given topic, they often simply create an illusion that they do by BSing' from John Stoszkowski Dave Collins

??: Best Research Methods book for coaches who don't necessarily want to be expert academics, just better coaches?

Let's celebrate in coaching by paying the professional ones fairly & allowing them to have a work-life balance. Let's celebrate volunteers by not treating them as an income stream. Let's value coach education as much as a World Class programme aspiring to excellence.

Anyone got a solution? The dog acts as if I’ve just had a bath in beef dripping after Zwift A hot tongue isn’t helpful!

“Thanks for being so open & honest, it’s really refreshing” someone said to me after a meeting this week. Shocking that components of integrity are refreshing, & are often discouraged in some sporting environments.
