Today marks two years since the British Sign Language (BSL) Act was passed by the UK Parliament. Through receiving royal assent, BSL is recognised as an indigenous language of Great Britain.

Adam Schembri Dr Audrey Cameron, OBE, HonFRSC When I was interpreting in a local hospital this week , we were sat in the waiting room next to a mum & child with CIs. They were watching us sign and said they started to learn but had to stop as they were told it would affect his speech.

Every linguistics (audiology, speech therapy, psychology etc) program everywhere on the planet needs to teach this.
Only deaf children may have their right to a fully accessible language denied.
Surely this is a social justice issue all linguists can acknowledge is important?

Normative conceptions of language rights are based on negative rights (governments should not interfere) and tolerance-oriented rights (the right to use one's language in a private sphere). Normative conceptions of linguistic justice are inadequate for sign language rights.
