One of the positive things that has come out of this Harvard case is that it has brought out conversations often conducted in private…not just about sexual harassment, but about power, gatekeeping, & WHO the scholars of Black studies are & how they serve the field.

One of the major drawbacks of the focus on sexual harrasment in academia is that it draws attention away from the million different ways that academics - including queers and women -- bully, threaten, intimidate and make life miserable for students in ways that are non-sexual.

The problem isn't that a bunch of lechy men (and many women) are harassing underlings: the problem is that the structure they inhabit has actively cultivated an atmosphere that is tantamount to a lifelong practice of hazing: endure this shit or you'll never be 'in' among us.

If the Harvard letter reveals anything it is that predatory behavior and sexual violence rarely occur in an isolated vacuum. It is often made possible by broader networks of people who are very much aware of it but also understand it’s part of what maintains their own power.

I think that's why this case wasn't necessarily *surprising*. For time, (senior) academics have claimed critical/feminist politics while protecting bullies and silencing anyone who expects things to change.

Honestly, I feel like that's the main purpose of academic collegiality.

Under-appreciated aspect of the Harvard letter is that it was Homi B's first publication since 1994.

In UK HE, before you get super excited to encounter a Black lecturer in a department, make sure to ask for how long they are around / how secure their position is…

(Fr fr we need more Black lecturers, but also we need them to be on more secure contracts….!)
