The Observer gave me a column in 2013. I had no credentials (I still don't have any) but Richard M Kavuma took a gamble on someone he didn't know to be the Friday columnist. I wrote every week, nonstop, for five straight years, uncensored. I'm eternally grateful.
The birth of The Observer on this day 20 years ago shaped my life in ways I couldn't have dreamt of. Most of the opportunities I've had as a journalist are because this gutsy newspaper & its leaders took a chance on a university student who wasn't even studying journalism! Asante!
