The United Nations in #Afghanistan expresses serious concern that female national UN staff have been prevented from reporting to work in Nangarhar province.

We remind de facto authorities that United Nations entities cannot operate and deliver life-saving assistance without female staff.

Today world celebrates progress on gender equality. Afghanistan marks 1 year since girls were banned from going to high school; 3 months since women were banned from working for NGOs; 18 months of banning women from participating in all aspects of public life. #InHerWords .

The UNFPA-supported Family Health Houses provide access to maternal and reproductive health services to women in the most underserved communities so we can help keep childbirths safe. This year, over 786,000 Afghans have utilized services in our 220 FHHs

Our #winter outreach in #Afghanistan aims to help families survive in the cold season. This month UNFPA has distributed 18,500+ blankets and tarpaulin sheets, prioritizing female-headed households. In November, we distributed winterization kits to benefit 40000 individuals.

Snowfall in #Afghanistan 's hard-to-reach areas increases challenges for communities to receive lifesaving services. UNFPA mobile health teams brave the odds to deliver services to these areas. This year, over 1.2 million Afghans have so far received services from our MHTs.

For a more effective humanitarian response, we must harness the strengths of women - the caregiver of families and communities in the midst of crises.

The 2023 Humanitarian Response Plan for #Afghanistan estimates that a record 28.3 million people will need humanitarian and protection assistance. UNFPA stands ready to respond to the maternal health, protection and psychosocial support needs of affected women and girls.

UNFPA Afghanistan reached more than 390,000 people with maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health care through 434 service delivery points across the country in October 2022. We are able to do this through the continued support of our donors and partners on the ground.

The 2021 #Afghanistan Midwifery report says the country needs 18000 new midwives to meet the demand for skilled health workers. UNFPA supports this effort through the Community Midwifery Education, which provides midwifery training to young women to serve their own communities.

We were at the Spin Boldak border of #Afghanistan and Pakistan last week to distribute blankets and tarpaulin sheets to female returnees to help them and their families comfortably settle into their shelters on their return during the winter season.

As we observe the International Volunteer Day, UNFPA acknowledges the support of young UnitedNations Victim in our last mile assurance efforts in Afghanistan to ensure that our programme supplies are reaching service delivery points in a timely and effective manner.
