I stuffed up today and went to work two days early: I'm still on leave and uni is closed! But the sun was shining, so I went for a ride. There were some dead ends but eventually I found some nice dense bush.

I think this summer is going to be all about bush and swimming holes.

Fieldwork for 2022 is finished. We did well to get most of installed in spite of the GSNZ covid outbreak. Our field team of Graydon, new PhD student Codee-Leigh, and the very knowledgable @Elliecetera made this possible.

Great to be home with Bree and Emily Warren-Smith

One more in today, and the last for the trip as our weather has run out. Still two seismic and three GNSS sites left to install, but that will have to wait for next year. Pretty good given we were short team members!

A long day today. Another two sites in, now just three to go. We spent a lot of the day nervously in clouds, but thankfully didn't get stuck. Team is tired now and eagerly awaiting curry. Thanks Graydon for the field nap photo!

Site two done. Nice and easy (although I wasn't the one digging the hole). Thunderstorms forecast this afternoon, so more prep time before flying next week. Fingers crossed for fine weather!

Yesterday after some more admin we finally put in our first site. Not a perfect spot as expected (see power lines) but we have had good data from nearby before. Nice to be out in magical forest.

On Thursday we spent the day testing and familiarising ourselves with the gear we are deploying. Thanks to Pnina at Passcal for the training: exciting to be deploying the fairly new Trillium Horizon sensors.

Yesterday we made it to Te Anau and unpacked with only a couple of minor hiccups (dropping my ice cream being one of them!). We can see one of our install locations from our accommodation which will help for judging flying. Today will be spent testing and training.

A few people now coming down with Covid symptoms post @2021Gsnz ... anyone who was there should probably think about testing over the next few days, even if you don't have symptoms! I think sitting the poster-session out was a good call 😔😷

What a week. My first time teaching on our VUW Kekerengu field camp was mostly pretty awesome, but very tiring! The students and demos were amazing and it was so much fun showing our students the some of the magnificent faults involved in the 2016 Kaikōura earthquake. Sleep now.

The permit is in, I have a big drill and the install gear is in the air on the way. Emily Warren-Smith has made another awesome logo. It might happen. If you want to follow our fieldwork, I think I'm moving to mastadon: scicomm.xyz/@calum_chamber…
