I think deep learning is attracting lots of funding because it makes it seem like you can magically turn data into algorithms without the slow work of understanding the data first. This is mostly unrealistic. Eventually people will learn this, probably by losing lots of money.

Remember to cast your vote for ICML Board of Directors.

We need to urgently cut CO2 emissions by phasing out deep learning within the next five years. This is why I vote Bayesian this year. Save the planet,

Being on a panel with Arificial General Intelligence believers is like trying to talk sense about space travel with someone who insists on discussing ‘10 times faster than light travel’ by 2045.

They both distract us from the present problems Responsible Robotics

The brain is a machine.
The brain is a computer.
The brain is a quantum computer.
The brain is a Bayesian algorithm.
The brain is a deep learning algorithm.
The brain is a ... good PR gimmick for getting your grant funded.

Statistics cannot be automated. Constructing a useful model requires investing time to learn the methods and how to incorporate your own domain expertise. My colleagues and I can show you the right path but you much carry the burden. You are Frodo and we are Samwise.

When Patrick Taylor’s cricket-loving father passed away, he knew exactly how best to remember him. He wrote a moving tribute full of cricketing references which was read out live on the BBC’s BBC Test Match Special by commentator Jonathan Agnew

'Most dangerously, we take successful algorithms & assign stories to their successes that extrapolate far beyond what they actually did. They are still merely mathematical incarnations, not intelligent entities no matter how spectacular their results.'
