One of the first Irish cuckoos tagged as part of the National Parks and Wildlife Service has returned home after a winter that took him as far as the rainforests in the Congo basin

I’ve just finished Displeasure Island by Alice Bell and it’s fucking delightful. The mystery trips you up every ten pages, the characters feel like mates, and it’s effortlessly funny - which is so hard to do. I adored this. It deserves to be enormous!

Mightnt be a popular take but I don't see this as an improvement. €50k was set aside for this when it needed no intervention at all, at best maybe a slight tidying of the edge. In a time when we need as much wildness and green as possible, gravel is not the answer.

When ppl ask me what's the high bar I'm trying to reach as a writer I will say books like Devil In A Blue Dress or 54 Pick-up but if you ask me what book represents the bar I don't think I'll ever reach ill say DARKNESS TAKE MY HAND,
A beautifully written descent into Hell .

Women’s Prize for Fiction: Anne Enright and Claire Kilroy shortlisted. Delighted to see these Irish authors rightly recognised for their excellent novels The Wren, The Wren and Soldier Sailor, unaccountably overlooked by the Booker jury last year
