Someone told me she read Susan Ito’s I WOULD MEET YOU ANYWHERE and enjoyed it. Then she said her 53yo adopted son stoutly refuses to search.

THEN she said that at moments while reading the book, she wanted to grab Susan’s shoulders and say “There is more to life than adoption!”

Shel Morningstar 🌊🐢🌻💚🌊🐢🌻💚 Tony Corsentino It turns out you can have nice parents, be successful, have a 'good' adoption, feel 'secure' as a person, and still want to search. It's an entirely reasonable thing to do. Millions of people call this genealogy and find it a delightful hobby.

Don’t come at me, speaking for adoptees, unless you were … [checks notes] … a personal assistant to someone who is adopted

“In my research on domestic adoption, I spoke with dozens of women like Evelyn,” Gretchen Sisson writes.

“Evelyn’s journey, however moving, is not representative of what research reveals about how people make decisions after being denied abortion care.” wapo.st/4aPt5pI

There are ways to handle discussion of adoptees’ experiences without perpetuating harmful stereotypes. Most importantly, let them speak in their own voice. Don’t speak over or for them. +

I am not interested in talking about adoption with anyone whose knowledge and expertise about how adopted people feel about being adopted adoption comes from being a personal assistant (!?!??) to an adopted person.

There is just absolutely no way I'd push a pregnant 19 year old out into the street, especially based on what she knows about the baby's father.

Really sick of the pathologizing of adopted people who want to know the most basic information about their own origins. As Dr. Lisa Munro has said so well, genealogy is considered a delightful hobby unless you’re adopted. Then you are deranged, ungrateful or “insecure.”

400 words was not nearly enough to address the oversights and oversimplications in the Post's reporting on adoption after abortion denial from last weekend, but I did my best.
