So sad to hear that Daniel Kahneman has died.

‘Thinking, Fast and Slow’ should be required reading for every diplomat - diplomacy is all about knowing what makes people tick and how to influence their decision-making. Hard to think of many better guides. Also great fun to read.

“I have only grown with years more firmly fixed in the belief that there is nothing more fatuous in international affairs than to believe in the unquestioned superiority of one’s own people and the inferiority of others” (1935)

Esme Howard, UK Ambassador to the US 1924-30.

A view of the south lobby of the General Assembly building at in , picturing one of two murals, each measuring 34 by 46 feet, entitled 'War and Peace' by 🇧🇷 artist Candido Portinari. The murals were donated to the United Nations 🇺🇳 in 1957.

Looks like the last person to read my copy of Esme Howard’s memoirs used this 1936 receipt from a Mayfair ladies’ tailor as a bookmark.

Can anybody figure out what comes before Maxwell in the name or what they bought?

Great pieces of art about diplomacy. Adding “Tableau commémoratif de la conférenece’ by Charles Toché (1902), in honour of the 1899 Hague Peace Conference.

This is a wonderful painting. My favourite detail is the broken string on the lute, probably symbolising the discord that the two ambassadors (Jean de Dinteville and Georges de Selve) were trying to resolve.

I did not know that Rubens had acted as an envoy of Philip IV of Spain in peace negotiations with Charles I.

In “Peace and War” (1629), Minerva goddess of wisdom is protecting peace (Pax) from Mars god of war.

Thanks for flagging Dries Willems
