Dave Petley It's tragic, and she's spot on that it's a governance issue. Home buyers shouldn't be expected to be hazard experts, and it's government's role to protect them, preferably proactively through development restrictions limiting the impact of developer greed.

Nature now charges $12,290 US to publish a single article open access. Shall we list some things that cost less than that? I'll go first: a 2017 BMW 330i sedan, a 7-day cruise for a family of four, six Louis Vuitton purses. 🤪

This is a very good article about the experience of two Canadian hikers when they were caught in rockfalls triggered by the 3 April 2024 Hualien . It also emphasises the incredible kindness of people in .

This is a very interesting article by Ralitsa Hiteva from the University of Sussex, whose house has been affected by a landslide. She describes in detail the unfairness of the ways in which landslide victims are treated in the UK (and elsewhere):- theconversation.com/a-landslide-fo…

On April 10, a Puyuma Express hit a falling rock and derailed (Fig. (b)). The aftershock of 0403 EQ triggered the rockfall. The investigation at the nearby site on April 3 shows that the upper slope remains unstable and has significant deposits (Fig. (a)).

Very interesting dashcam footage emerged of rockfalls triggered by the 3 April 2024 Mw=7.4 Hualien earthquake. I've collected together the various bits of footage on Twitter in a blog post, plus a segment taken from an aircraft overflying the mountains: eos.org/thelandslidebl…

Dave Petley I just wanted to contextualise what this driver did (and what allowed them to do it) by presenting a graphic that contains all the linked elements to be considered when designing an effective hazard warning system (paper is flood related but EQ will be similar).

This video is fascinating. The driver of a car in gets warning of an and takes appropriate action, stopping in a rockfall shelter. And what a good job they did, as rockfalls inundated the road.
Early warning systems save lives, so long as you have a plan.
