My newest piece today in TheHillOpinion addresses an often overlooked aspect of life behind bars that illuminates the need for a bipartisan prison oversight bill advancing in Congress: There’s nothing woke about ruling against sleep deprivation in prison thehill.com/opinion/judici…

Our analyses show sentencing reform alone will not advance equitable justice. CJI looks forward to applying data-driven strategies in our partnerships with policymakers seeking to reduce racial disparity in imprisonment.tinyurl.com/yc5twwrj The NCJA Council on Criminal Justice Georgia State University

One more thing: I've said this a million times, but violence reduction is a team sport and the team can't win if the individual players don't play well together. Buffalo is yet another example of a city learning this lesson over time.

Some may see these findings as disappointing. We want to believe that sentencing reforms could take more credit for narrowing racial, ethnic and gender disparities in imprisonment.

But they are illuminating--and should help focus reform energy where it will have greatest impact.

Sharing my new article exploring how we can revitalize democracy and democratize policing. Adopting policies and taking actions that I describe can help law enforcement agencies and our democracy itself earn greater legitimacy, which is urgently needed.

The sharp decline in homicide is indeed encouraging. That said, in too many places other violent crimes like aggravated assault though declining remain above 2019 levels. There's much more work to do both in law enforcement & other interventions to prevent and solve more crimes.

Officers are part of our community, and assaults on officers should upset us all -- many evidence-based Violence reduction initiatives may save officer lives, too. -- we can't put this all on our officers.
