🚨 Huge news: The European Court of Human Rights has ruled that Switzerland's efforts to meet its emission reduction targets have been woefully inadequate.

The ruling is binding and could influence the law in 46 countries, including the UK.

Australia is one of those 7 countries, and I feel incredibly lucky to live here and breathe clean air.

BUT (it's a big but) Australia is the THIRD largest exporter of fossils fuels - the contribution that Australia makes to pollution globally is immense.

Wonderfully said.

This is exactly what we need - creates healthy communities, and has substantial cost and carbon emissions savings! If we could achieve this there would be substantially less pressure on our hospitals.

*Just some* of Australia's climate disasters since 2019.

πŸ‘‰ Post-disaster people need urgent access to GPs, pharmacies & support
πŸ‘‰ As is, primary care is NOT set up to provide the level of care we need during / after disasters
πŸ‘‰ This leads to poor health outcomes

South Australia went from 1% renewables in 2007 to 68% in just over 15 years. It's on track for 100% renewable energy by 2030.

It can be done.

We have the solutions. Implement them.

Climate change is making atmospheric rivers stronger, increasing the amount of rain they sweep up and dump on the west coast of North America. This is putting more and more people at risk every year, all the way from Baja California to BC. cnn.com/us/live-news/c…

It's increasingly less helpful to use terms like '1 in 1000 years' and 'unprecedented' in a world where climate change will cause us to reframe the likelihood of climate impacts on communities. Persistence of this language is a barrier to community resilience building.

UCLA has recorded nearly 12 inches of rain in the last 24 hours, a 1 in 1000-year rainfall rainfall event for Westwood.

A truly unprecedented storm in modern history for the region as an atmospheric river stalls over the region.

Climate change has killed at least four million people. I wrote this because I felt like I was the only one who had noticed. If you ever read and share anything I've written, I hope it'll be this short piece, out today in Nature Medicine

A simple and elegant solution.

Reduces urban heat island effect and heat stress, and reduces the need for air conditioning.

Good for climate. Good for health. Easy to do.

Thanks @1395FIVEaa for having me on air this morning to talk about 2023 as the hottest year, what that means for the health of our communities, and what we must do to protect our health and stay well during extreme weather.
