But we know there is more to do, and we will continue to work closely with Trusts to implement the NHS three-year delivery plan for maternity and neonatal services, to ensure safer, more personalised and equitable maternity care for all women, babies and families.

We continue to make improvements and thanks to recent recruitment efforts the number of full-time midwives has increased by over 1,000 on last year, and as part of the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, nursing and midwifery training places will increase to around 58,000 by 2031/32.

It is good news that women had a better experience of maternity care last year compared with 2022 – importantly, most women were positive about their interactions with staff and the advice and support they received during labour.

It was wonderful to meet nursing associates (NAs) and trainee nursing associates (TNAs) from Guy's and St Thomas' and Evelina London last week and hear about their fantastic work, their journeys and the nursing colleagues who have supported them along the way. #teamCNO 🧵(1/4)

Since day one, the NHS has never stood still. It has continually innovated and adapted to meet the changing needs of our patients – and continues to do so.

To everyone who's made such a difference to many millions of lives over the last 75 years — thank you.

This will set out a clear strategic direction of travel for the professions over the next 3-5 years and highlight how nurses, midwives and care staff can contribute to the key ambitions and priorities of the entire system.

The plan also recognises the importance of diversity across our workforce and the value and skills nurses and midwives working in areas such as, research and education bring, as well as the need to increase the number of those in advanced practice roles.

Crucially, the plan recognises that the need to look after and retain our current workforce is just as vital as the need to grow it. We must ensure all #teamCNO colleagues are supported to flourish in their career, have opportunities to progress and reach their full potential.

The plan commits to increasing the number of all nursing and midwifery graduates; future nurses and midwives on degree courses and those gaining their degree through the apprenticeships route. It includes an increase in the number of training places for nursing associates too.

To achieve this, we need changes to increase the number of people joining our professions and to make it easier for them to do so. Recognising that nursing and midwifery are graduate professions, educational reforms will focus on flexibility and widening access.

The plan, backed and funded by £2.4 billion from the government, commits to significantly growing our nursing and midwifery workforce, including in specific areas such as, community nursing, health visiting, school nursing, mental health and learning disabilities.

The actions set out will be reflected in my professional strategy for nursing and midwifery which will be launched later this year.
