Is the endowment effect not a consequence of loss aversion?
Cautious Utility—a new model—suggests it can arise from uncertainty about tradeoffs, and yields an endowment effect even if losses and gains are treated symmetrically:

Our paper with Josh Jackson on whether global values have converged over the last 40 years is out: go.nature.com/4cN7XSN. We find that globalization and rising wealth did not result in uniform acceptance of 'Western values,' such as support for abortion and gay rights.

I applaud that editor. I believe there is a bias in editorial decisions in econ journals in favor of papers that “look hard” to produce. Degree of difficulty should be used to judge gymnastics and figure skating, not scientific contributions.

Do we hold others responsible for their choices even when these choices have been shaped by unfair unequal circumstances?

Yes, we do, suggests 'Shallow Meritocracy' from Peter Andre (Peter Andre), recently accepted at REStud.

It's true! I recently learned that Caltech has granted me tenure 🥹 I would say that it's a dream come true but I never dared to dream such a dream.

I just feel so much gratitude & desire to pay forward the encouragement and kindness that's been given to me.

Let the fun begin!

• Which auction formats are robust to shill bidding?

• Why are Dutch auctions so popular in Web3?

• What happens if you change the credible auctions model to have public rather than private communication?

A new paper with Andrew Komo and Scott Kominers answers all these…

I am very excited to share my Job Market Paper! 🚨

The punchline: Complexity changes our choice processes; in complex decisions, decision-making becomes more procedural.

I was so lucky to be able to have Danny Kahneman as a best friend and collaborator for decades. He usually ended our conversations with 'to be continued...' but I now have to simulate his part which is impossible. My favorite image of us 'working'.

Kahneman was always an inspiration. A very creative and kind man who produced some of the foundations on which behavioral economics and behavioral science stand today.
