Patterns facilitate recognition.
But don’t get locked by the pattern.
When a phenotype fits a pattern, that reassures you with regards to management.
But, when a phenotype doesn’t fit a pattern, don’t force it to fit. Take a step back, & trust in first principles

Medicine is about repetition. You see disease patterns over and over and learn to recognize them and react. This comes from experience not classes or board exams. So if you struggle with Step 1 don’t worry. The real learning comes later. Excel there and you’ll become a great

I did deep breathing exercises with a patient in the ED and it prevented sedation. Though it may not always work, ALWAYS trial non-pharmacological management first if patient/staff safety is not at risk for patients of any age
