António Guterres UN experts have already warned that continued Israeli military operations will result in the mass ethnic cleansing of Palestinians. ASEAN, and the rest of the world, must not allow a genocide to happen on their watch.

António Guterres This resolution reflects the bare minimum that must be done, namely an immediate ceasefire and access for humanitarian aid. The int'l community must stop any further aggression from Israel in Gaza, whether through airstrikes or a ground invasion.

We echo António Guterres statement that the attacks on Oct. 7 do not justify Israel’s collective punishment of Gaza, just as the decades-long suffering of Palestinians under Israeli occupation do not justify attacks on Israeli civilians.

APHR is deeply saddened by the horrific loss of life in Israel and Palestine in the last few weeks and strongly urges all ASEAN member states, as well as all other states, to vote for the resolution circulated in the UN General Assembly Emergency Session.

“We share President Jokowi’s admirable sentiments about making ASEAN a bastion of religious tolerance & harmony,” APHR Board Member Indonesian MP Eva K Sundari said. “However, in order to achieve this, Indonesia as ASEAN chair must keep up the momentum by taking concrete actions.”

The 1st panel which looked at ASEANs response so far brought a lot of truths & challenges to the table. Eva K Sundari made a solid point on how ASEAN was not adhering to the principles laid out in the charter such as humanity, instead just hiding behind principle of non-interference.

At the ASEAN Summit next week, ASEAN leaders must decide whether they really want ASEAN to matter or whether the region will just be a pawn in matters of international importance.

How can ASEAN matter if it cannot come together to resolve the most crucial and pressing issue in the region? Who is really deciding on ASEAN’s foreign affairs - ASEAN member states or China?

These repeated pleas seem to fall on deaf ears as ASEAN continues to act as if its business as usual, while Thailand and others hold track 1.5 meetings that further undermine ASEAN’s relevance.

The theme of Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN this year is ASEAN Matters. But ASEAN’s silence on key issues, particularly the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, calls the bloc’s relevance into question.

APHR participated ASEAN Peoples' Forum in Jakarta yesterday and today where representatives of civil society from across the region have once again called for firmer action on the Myanmar junta, which has continued to flout ASEAN’s Five Point Consensus. #WhatsHappeninglnMyanmar
