Following the large inundation event Flow-MER scientists Jared Reid and Emeritus Professor Nick Reid undertook a waterbird survey. Many parts of the floodplain were still wet, providing great habitat for waterbirds.

In 2021-22, rainfall and #WaterForTheEnvironment combined to inundate the lower Warrego and Western Floodplain, reconnecting isolated waterholes.

The flows boosted numbers of many local fish species, including the Hyrtl’s tandan catfish. 🐱🐟

The rainbow bee-eater (Merops ornatus) is classified as a significant migratory land bird species in the Flow-MER program. It is one of the bird species that is recorded at Toorale National Park and the Warrego Western Floodplain.

A wet spring has triggered large-scale waterbird breeding in the Gwydir Wetlands, for the 2nd year in a row! 🥳

2rog Consulting has been monitoring Murray Cod and the results aren’t great.
However as Paul Frazier said “It's really about whether we value them enough…it costs money and it requires an effort from society…the actual science is not that hard, it's the political will”

Over the last 3 years our team has only found 6 Murray Cod in the Darling-Baaka River between Bourke and Louth. This is reason for concern.
