Absolutely terrible conditions in Sulphur, Oklahoma for search and rescue efforts. Around 6 inches of rain has fallen resulting in flash flooding, with more on the way.

No. Twitter was so much better.

Fewer weird p*rn bots in everyone's replies.
Fewer insane right-wing loony toons in everyone's replies.
Nazis got banned instead of paid.

It wasn't perfect. It was a chaotic mess. But it was our chaotic mess and that was enough.

Dr Noor Bari Me too. Except for the dentist. How are we supposed to use our personal responsibility to stay safe at the dentist? When are dentists going to start implementing some infection control? I really dread dental checkups now.

Jessica I found a COVID optimised dentist… loooooong drive that includes the Sydney harbour bridge (I’m always in the wrong lane) but worth it.

Ventilation/HEPA filtration is to prevent long range transmission of COVID, and extreme concentrations of infectious aerosol for the most part.

You definitely need a properly fitted respirator at conversation distance… and personally I wear one whenever I am in a building that…

Thank you to Cat in the Hat 🐈‍⬛ 🎩 🇬🇧 for making this simple graphic to display the problem we have here in England.
We don't have a sicknote culture.
We have sick children.
The number of kids with Long Covid has nearly doubled in a year.

A HS friend asked if we can get together when he’s in town soon. So now I have to “come out” to him as a C19-safe person. I guess I’m glad I had a lot of experience a lifetime ago w/ coming out as gay. But I didn’t think I’d have to do it all over again at this point in my life.

A radiologist refuses to perform an ultrasound bc they don’t “feel comfortable” with a trans patient. A physician asks if their kidney disease is caused by being a “deviant” (bc they’re gay). Another physician asks if testosterone caused their Kawasaki’s disease (at age 2).

Jeff Sharlet Richard Hall He means these are people who are semi-regular presences at any NYC protest, not specifically to do w Columbia. They're unwell, IRL Twitter trolls.

Richard Hall Thanks for this reporting. The conflation of outside-the-gate & students is indeed disturbing. But I'm puzzled by 'semi-regular crowd.' In 30 years of visiting Columbia from time to time, I've never seen this crowd. So it doesn't seem 'nothing to see here, biz as usual.'

Richard Hall Adam Tooze Yes, great example of exactly this from Jonathan Freedland in the Guardian yesterday. He quotes three examples to demonstrate extremism at Columbia, knowing full well that none of them took place on campus. Shameless.

Bad reporting like this convinced people that the Columbia protesters are anti-Semitic crazies.

This person has nothing to do with Columbia, is a well-known agitator.

And yet a journo snaps a pic outside the gates and uses it to smear the students inside

One thing I found interesting was that the protest organisers studied the Columbia archives to learn from the 1968 protest movement. They copied their tactics and later invited some 1968 vets to campus.

Story on that here:

These aren't radicals. As someone told me the other day: 'It's a bunch of nerds sitting on the ground praying, chanting and doing homework.'

They are still going to classes.

It's quite clear what happened: Just outside the university gates, a semi-regular crowd of quite unwell people who have nothing to do with the Columbia protest have gathered with the explicit aim of getting on TV. Press show up and film them, use the footage to smear the students

It's a multi-faith protest. Despite the claims that the protest is an anti-Semitic hell-hole, I met plenty of Jewish students taking part who completely rejected the notion.

I visited the Gaza solidarity camp at Columbia yesterday and wanted to share a few
very brief observations.

First, it's one of the most highly organised student protests I've ever seen. They have media and de-escalation training, a nutzone to protest students with allergies.

There is surely a special category of Darwin Award available for a professor who argues that we need to get infected with viruses to help humanity evolve, only for them to develop long term health problems from exposure to the virus.
