My contribution to the “we still have to vote for Biden discourse” is this: I think the popular debate suffers from a flawed premise that this is some abstract trolly problem without political context. 🧵

“Vigilantes honk horns, throw trash, and yell “carp,” meaning “bottom-feeders,” from their cars. Residents circulate photos of unhoused people on social media; one Facebook group promotes citizens taking matters into their own hands, even “final answers.”

Nothing makes me want to give up on research like being a social epidemiologist and talking to people from the NIH 😪

NEW POLICING PUB⚡️

As attention to police violence grows, the civ legal support for residents they harm stagnates, illustrating what I call a legal mirage—a knowable legal process exists to pursue your rights, but a variety of structural/human/$ barriers make it unreachable. 1/7

something i can't stop thinking about is how vehemently young people do not want to enter the world as it exists, and their willingness to challenge and contest it.

Sometimes my lectures really are 🔥. Feeling excited for my students to learn about the disability rights movement this week! (Including, which I mention for no... particular reason... the longest occupation of a federal building in US history, winning critical 504 protections✊🏼)

NEWS: 3,700 University of Pennsylvania grad students have unionized with the UAW, in a landslide 1807-to-97 vote.

The union claims they 'will become the largest new private sector union in Philadelphia in over 50 years.'

Thanks Senate Armed Services Committee Elizabeth Warren for inviting me to testify.

Drug shortages are a complex issue, but here is my best attempt at condensing into 5 minute opening remarks 1) key challenges 2) why public sector manufacturing is an essential part of any solution.

California lacks sufficient shelter for its homeless population.

CoCs (community-based networks of care/services) report only 39 shelter beds for every 100 people experiencing homelessness.

Many people truly have nowhere to go.

This is 'safety' and 'free speech' at Dartmouth 🌲: former director of Jewish studies and history professor Annelise Orleck thrown to the ground by cops while engaged in nonviolent protest. Her 'crime'--emphatic speech. Shame.

The NYPD is sending an army to beat up, tear gas, and arrest kids who just don’t want their tuition going to fund unspeakable violence. This is unconscionable.

Today is the last day U.S. hospitals will be required to report COVID admissions, capacity, or occupancy data to the federal government.

This will make it even more difficult to track the state of the ongoing COVID pandemic, as well as monitor potential pandemics like bird flu.

My students JUST read Robin Zheng’s “Theorizing Social Change,” in case you want a devastating little article articulating exactly what UChicago’s president is missing here! 🌱📖🧐

This story is bananas. Florida charges people $50 a day for their stay in prison. The state wants this woman to pay $127,000 because she was sentenced to 7 years—even though she only served 10 months.

A perfect example of how the gov’t sets people up to fail upon release.
