The first blue butterfly to emerge in spring is the holly blue, which can be found in gardens, woodlands and parks.

They generally emerge twice each year, once from April and again in July. The spring generation feeds on holly and the summer generation feeds on ivy.

Arriving here in April for the summer months, the sedge warbler can be heard in wetlands from now through to August, before they make the journey back to Africa for winter. The males are great mimics, introducing random phases into their song to try and attract a mate.

On sunny days, look out for common lizards basking in the sun in heathlands, grasslands and perhaps even your garden if you're lucky!

The common lizard is the UK's most common and widespread reptile. Adults emerge from hibernation in spring, mating in April and May.

Tree bumblebees are relatively new arrivals to the UK and were first recorded here in 2001. This species is now one of the common 'big seven' bumblebees in the country!

This bee has fuzzy, brown-orange hairs on its thorax, a black abdomen, and a white tail.

The pied flycatcher is a summer visitor arriving this month, migrating here from West Africa where they spend the winter.

Look out for these small black and white birds in woodland, parks and gardens over the coming months, searching for insects which they can catch mid-air.

In April and May, our ancient woodlands are awash with the white, starry flowers and smell of wild garlic.

This early flowering allows plants to make the most of the sunlight that is still able to make it to the forest floor habitat, before the canopy becomes too dense.

Often seen in woodlands and areas with dappled sunlight, the speckled wood is a brown butterfly that feeds on honeydew from trees.

The speckled wood is the only brown butterfly with three small, cream-ringed eyespots on its hindwings, and one on each of its forewings.

Do you recognise what plant this is?

Honeysuckle has nectar-rich, scented flowers that are visited by all kinds of insects, and climbing stems which provide nest sites and material for birds. Their whorls of trumpet-shaped flowers appear from June to August.
