The amount of times I’ve been asked to work with severely distressed 3/4 yr olds who are being made to sit still for hours when every ounce of their (totally normal) being is telling them to move, explore & play.

Two-thirds of social workers have witnessed children living in dangerous conditions with excessive levels of mould, according to a survey by the Social Workers Union (SWU).

The union is calling this a 'national scandal'.

Thought provoking article from Paul Hougham … β€˜It may be that smaller schools promote more potential for human connection over the industrial processes of larger institutions, and in which integration and inclusion have a better chance of making intersectionality visible’

The impulse to crop out, segregate and airbrush out some CYP (& hence families) is deeply rooted & particularly sharp in England where setting, streaming, alt prov & a bewildering assortment of diff forms of sifting are the norm. Goes way beyond photos!

Another lovely exposition of the paradox. β€˜High expectations’ actually means β€˜low expectations’ by default.

The fact council staff and some parents would rather kids with complex needs by erased from sch photographs implies, of course, an underlying wish to remove them entirely. Disturbing and extremely distressing for CYP and families. Eugenics is absolutely still with us.

How long are people going to blame the COVID lockdown for all the ills of society? Five years? 10 years? It's joined social media to create a dynamic duo - the catch-all explanations for anything going wrong re CYP - this absolutely does not reflect the 'evidence' at all.

In schooling we confuse standardisation with equality of opportunity. Making everything from curricular, to beh expectations and success criteria the same for everyone doesn’t equalise opportunity, it reproduces social segregation and β€˜inequality’.

Dr Chris Bagley πŸ‘‹ In Australia, we hear that 80% attendance is crisis-time.(When 80% is not an 'A' ...). This is so damaging to CYP who are struggling with attendance, especially those who want to attend but can't. They hear that their futures are doomed, when we need to offer hope and support.

1/ 1000s of CYP show unbelievable resilience in the face of huge challenges to make it in less than 90%. How does placing them in a RED zone & assigning a label of SEVERE RISK help? It is also scientifically illiterate to simplistically link 'attendance' with 'attainment'.

There's some great work going on at Pinner Wood School and Big Education 🌎. Supporting CYP to feel seen, heard and with a focus on self-regulation in a climate of openness and care.
