I wonder how many school students we've reached in our Holocaust Education sessions over the last few years, Helen Weinstein ? 5000? 10,000? How many students have written poems, stories, done empathy drama work? What do you think?

I'm really looking forward to this exhibition. It shows in Jewish people's own words what they thought and how they reacted to the oncoming horror of the Holocaust. (It also includes a letter to my father's cousin.)

On this day in 1944, my father's uncle Martin (Chil Majer) Rozen was in Drancy transit camp awaiting deportation to Auschwitz. The inmates said that they were heading for 'PitchipoΓ―' - a nonsense word to cover that no one knew what their fate would be.

Today, 1944 at 2.30am, 4 gendarmes knocked at the door of Mme Bobières and arrested Martin Rosen/Chil Majer Rozen. In their report, they recorded that he was Jewish, was wearing cotton clothes, flat shoes, a beret and he had a scar on his face. They handed him over to the Nazis.

79 years ago this week, an edict from the Nazi Security Police, based in Poitiers in France was being 'actioned' by the local Prefects and Sub-Prefects in the region. This would result in the arrest of my father's uncle. I've translated the edict here:

Remember, it didn’t start with gas chambers. It started with politicians dividing the people with β€˜us vs. them.’ It started with intolerance and hate speech.

When people stopped caring, became desensitized, and turned a blind eye, it became a slippery slope to genocide.
