Dr. Robin J. Fales This was such a wonderful team effort! We found that regardless of nitrogen levels, blades of both kelp species had negative growth rates & physically deteriorated at 21°C
🚨New publication🚨 Co-first author team with Dr. Brooke Weigel 🌊 This work aimed to understand the interactive effects of temperature and nitrogen on kelp physiology, we found that temperature is a really important stressor for both bull kelp and sugar kelp

Stunning footage (pun intended) of a mussel doing what it does best - stick to salty wet surfaces. Over 40 years of research (by me and many others) summarized in 4 sweet minutes.kqed.org/science/198181…

So we found giant #kelp ( #Macrocystis ) in our low-zone plot surveys in Southern California, which is totally awesome b/c now we get to measure functional traits for #Macrocystis !!! Dr. Robin J. Fales John Griffin #PhycologyFriday
Very excited about all the great kelp work from Dr. Brooke Weigel 🌊 at Friday Harbor Labs. This paper examines the effect of temperature and nitrogen on Nereo gametophytes & tiny (juvenile) sporophytes. More cool work coming soon!
The The Seattle Times wrote a wonderful article about our snow algae research!! 🏔❄️ seattletimes.com/pacific-nw-mag…
So impressed with how Jack Litle handles all that life throws at him. Putting your research plans on pause - again - showcases your patience, resilience and courage. 🐌🌊💪
I'm happy to share that this post-doc is me! I am joining Matt Bracken and collaborators to work on seaweed functional traits starting in July. I am really looking forward to being part of this awesome team!

Several years ago & at the behest of Glen Layne-Worthey, I asked for internal $$ to scan this ✨amazing✨ folio w/ etchings of seaweeds from 1840: 'Illustrationes algarum' from Postels & Ruprecht. Discovered it had never been made public, so I fixed that. Enjoy! searchworks.stanford.edu/view/2225739
