A very important topic: analysis about language barriers in Open Source by Isabella Ferreira #chaosscon
Important question being studied and posed to us by PHD student Isabella Ferreira.
If the answer is yes, what can we do about it? #CHAOSScon
Next up: Isabella Ferreira dropping knowledge at #CHAOSScon about barriers contributing to #opensource and #language barriers for non-native English speakers.
Props to all the #FOSS folx who put themselves out there, even if English is not your first language!
Do non-native English speakers face a language barrier in open source? Can non-native speakers transition from translations to other contributions? How can we practically address these challenges for the future? #CHAOSScon
This is some ๐ฅ๐ฅ from Isabella Ferreira!
Congratulations to Dr. Ferreira!! Isabella Ferreira It was such an honor and great pleasure working with you.

What an interesting discussion about language barriers to contribute to OSS projects having OpenStack and GNOME as input data by Isabella Ferreira at #chaosscon
Language issues for open source contributors - soooo happy to see this talk by Isabella Ferreira. Contributing to projects in languages where you don't feel confident is such a challenge - and sometimes international slang is tricky even if you share a language!

Together with Nan Yang Isabella Ferreira MCIS lab we analyzed 292 proposals submitted to Apache - The ASF to understand what motivates projects to join: community-related topics are the most popular. Accepted at ICSE SEIS ( #preprint to come)
A recurring theme this week: #language barriers. I'm thinking, Isabella Ferreira talked at #CHAOSScon about translation contributors not getting into code contributions.
But perhaps some don't want to write code. They want access! And translations is a way to do it for others.
.Isabella Ferreira studied a set of open source projects, to verify who are native vs non-native english speakers, then compared langs to english to find how similar langs were (e.g. Chinese & hebrew v dissimilar to English, but some euro languages are closer).

Why projects join Apache - The ASF? Nan Yang presents an overview of 292 proposals submitted to the Apache Software Foundation. Joint work with Isabella Ferreira yt and MCIS lab. Preprint win.tue.nl/~aserebre/ICSEโฆ
Happy to announce that our paper has been published at IST. Results over 29,303 (re-)refactorings indicate that (re-)refactorings rather improve or keep unaffected quality attributes: doi.org/10.1016/j.infsโฆ Alessandro Garcia Isabella Ferreira Diego Cedrim Leonardo Sousa Willian Oizumi ๐๐ค
.Isabella Ferreira: So what do we do about these clear language barriers? Native speakers - team up with a non native speaker to support them. Non-native - consider trying out grammar tools.
