We are deeply disappointed to hear this important service is set to close to new NHS staff referrals from secondary care and are sharing our concerns with NHS England. Mental health support is as vital now as ever 1/2

Have you watched the recent Medical Care webinar with Drs Rifca Le Dieu and Harriet Gordon?

Together they explore the current NHS workforce crisis, and discusses how retaining experienced staff later in their careers can combat this: ow.ly/yaaT50QOSSo

Important thread from Adrian Boyle.
The artificial focus on quick wins over next few weeks will potentially cause harm to the sickest and most vulnerable patients.
If target 'hit' in March and 'missed' in April what has been achieved?

3 things A&E must do:
i) Early identification of unwell patients from undifferentiated arrivals
ii) Providing specific treatment for time critical conditions
iii) Avoid overcrowding by admitting & discharging appropriate patients

This thread is an excellent portrayal of what we are seeing every day. There is a massive need for people to see the patient first and the tests second. What does the patient want? What difference are tests truly going to make? Asking that is the true skill of a clinician.

Key thing in this flowchart = a well outpatient without AKI who has potassium 6.3mmol/L on routine bloods can be managed as an outpatient

(yes they need prompt review, repeat bloods and some thought - but what they don’t need is a repeat test in ED at 3am)

Today I covered junior doctors on strike. I am happy to do so. They need £20 an hour isn't an unreasonable request. They are the engine of the NHS. If we lose them we cant just replace them. Consultant covering a JD is not like4like. Almost broke me. 🥹

Happy Christmas.
A time to hold close those you love most, and consider those less fortunate.
Whatever your faith, it’s a time to reflect, have memories, and look forward with hope.
My faith is in human kindness. We can witness that and give it everyday, wherever and whatever.

Well said Dru 👏 - when someone asks me something about ‘Bed 5’ in ICU I ask them to clarify the name of the patient - using patients’ names is not be only safer for patients but also shows respect for patients as people 👍
