Last week I was honoured to give a seminar at CASCADE Cardiff University after I wrote to thank Donald Forrester for his talk on Social Work & rights. Making sense of SW beyond ‘help’, oriented by rights, feels disruptive & meaningful. I was so warmly welcomed & feel very grateful 🙌🏼 (1/2)
Happy launch day!!!
So excited that the past 18 months of work with Changing Relations has come to fruition as we share the process, evaluation, & resources in responding to children and young people's disclosures of abuse Durham Sociology CRiVA ResDevelopment Research England
Amazing thread recapping the brilliant talks from Day 1 of the Preventing GBV conference co-organised by CRiVA UCLanCriminalJustice! Such a learning-filled day and reading Nikki Rutter's insights boosted my learning even more
Dr Kelly Henderson Durham Uni MSW Prof. Carlene Firmin The University of Central Lancashire - UCLan CRiVA You too! Watching Carlene present is like watching a really great movie; it doesn't matter how many times I've seen it, I always come away with something new. Listening to Carlene, it's a new thought, a new reflection, a new way to consider safety and safeguarding ☺️💗
Thought-provoking talk by Professor Geetanjali Gangoli on critically reflecting on the impact of criminalisation and the law on prevention, its connection to social justice, and the importance of centring the voices of the affected communities
Overall, changing the law may not change all behaviour, but it does create some normative understanding of acceptable and unacceptable behaviour; how to do this without criminalising some of the most vulnerable/oppressed members of a community #PreventingGBV
Prof. Carlene Firmin spoke to how systems and processes are not necessarily providers of safety. All too frequently, they replicate and reproduce racist, sexist, and harmful experiences; particularly the police and schools who can we seen as systems of violence/harm
Great pleasure to work with the like-minds and wild-minds. Cannot be prouder to have such a great team promoting #transcultural #socialwork Big shout-out for Hei UK Welcomes Refugees 🧡 , our Janelle Rabe and Jane Shears from BASW Well done BASW Diaspora Social Workers SIG for such a great conference!
✨ New pub alert ✨ great to have this piece A/Prof Bianca Fileborn and I wrote out which adds an important LGBTQ+ perspective to the street harassment literature 🌈
Our paper argues that a cisheteronormative gendered framework cannot fully account for queer peoples experiences.
