Usually I’m not too bothered by my lack of access to New York (or LA) rep scenes but everyone watching Shimizu without me is really bumming me out. If you can go to these movies you’ve absolutely gotta do it.

I saw five Shimizu films this weekend — all elegant and stylish — but the best was Mr Thank You. Really remarkable film — contains one of the greatest one-off scenes in cinema (the Korean migrant worker).

CHILDREN IN THE WIND, Shimizu’s most adored film in Japan, is the saga of two brothers whose idyllic country life is shattered when their father is wrongly arrested. A shimmering evocation of the growth pangs of childhood. One show: Fri, 5/10, rare 35mm: bit.ly/3ybZ19C

Just got out of a screening of Japanese Girls at the Harbor - gorgeous. If you’re in NYC try to make it out to the Shimizu series they are only allowed to screen each film once because the prints are so precious

We've made English subtitles for SOUND IN THE MIST (1956). It'll be likely the first time the film will screen in an English-speaking country!

Screening 5/23 & 5/30: japansoc.org/SoundinMist

Two shots in Ozu’s DRAGNET GIRL and Shimizu’s JAPANESE GIRLS AT THE HARBOR show the same stretch of sidewalk. One time I found this location in Yokohama, and a tree (still standing) that appears in JAPANESE GIRLS and again in Shimizu’s FORGET LOVE FOR NOW.
