I am so sick of shortsighted executives destroying beloved news organizations in lieu of coming up with an actual business strategy.

We are never going to solve the problems facing journalism with fewer journalists and less coverage of the communities right outside our doors.

Now that the news is out that @dcist is dead and 15 great people will lose their jobs, some truths. No one at @dcist/WAMU 88.5 was ignorant of the tough realities of media. But this is more a failure of leadership than anything.

one issue with the news desert framing (which has been valuable!), is that it misses places like DC - which has as many journalists per capita as any place in the world yet whose residents starve for local coverage and civic information. the shuttering of DCist is a crisis

In my note to Erika, WAMU's General Manager, I told her:

Your planned actions chip away at our democracy.

I urge you to quickly reverse course. Keep local news alive in our nation's capital. Work with WAMU staffers to find solutions. Be inclusive. Or leave.

This is infuriating and should greatly concern everyone living in the D.C. region.

The journalists at DCist are fiercely dedicated and produce some of the best (and most accessible) local reporting in the District.

Now folks face huge $$$ bills to pay for their monitors — or jail.

NEWS: Dr. Scott Moran, the CEO of Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, has been placed on leave amid allegations from his colleagues of bullying, harassment and violent threats.

Perkins is Maryland’s maximum security forensic psych hospital.
