All these new subgenre labels are bc of marketing. Reading as a kid, anything could happen in a book. Formal variety w/in a genre was taken for granted. Everything is so choreographed now so you know exactly what you gettin instead of being vulnerable to having an experience.

The publisher has your money today, with only credit card processing fees. As opposed to 3+ months from now, minus 25% or more fees. And as Kristen Renee Miller notes, if they pay on net receipts (which many presses do), your direct purchase also means more money in the author's pocket.

Every publisher I talk with now (whether they were with SPD or other distro) is talking about how to increase direct sales, which pay for print runs, royalties, and generally keep the lights on. Ordering from affected presses is the very best thing you can do for them this week!
