Non-elite private colleges (blue) are a risky bet and they are due for a market correction.

Buyer beware.

In summary:

1. Try to wear a jacket. Or find ways to layer
2. Pay attention to the complex construction of clothes
3. Don't assume everything has to be slim-fit
4. Think about outfits as shapes
5. Pay attention to how fabric drapes

IMO, that's what ppl admire in good outfits

When people admire fashions of the past, they often bring up issues unrelated to clothes (e.g., respectability, politics, body type). What they're actually admiring are the shapes of these clothes and how they drape. Notice the procession of wonderful shapes here:

It’s growing harder and harder to ignore the rising rates of autism diagnoses in our country. We need to figure out how to manage autism, our squarest peg.

I wrote about this morning. Here's a picture of my square peg. Love him!

This week, my great-grandma, Lily Ebert, a 100-year-old Auschwitz survivor, became a great-great-grandma.

'I never expected to survive the Holocaust. Now I have five beautiful generations. The Nazis did not win!'

From near-death at Auschwitz to five generations of Jewish life.

This is another example of what I like to call 'public service shrinkflation.' We've seen it across the United States since Covid -- shorter library hours, less frequent transit, and other cuts to public goods. And this is happening despite MASSIVE inflationary Covid spending.

A couple of years ago, I did background research for a news outlet about a high performing charter school. Teachers had lots of complaints - hours, workload - but loved the centralized curriculum. Teachers told me they were happy to not have to write their own.

Things i'd rather do than make my own curriculum:

Home visits and and calls
Detailed feedback on student work
Grading/Scoring
Encouraging students
Bringing in items of interest
Internalizing lesson
Checking safety nets
Checking extensions
Reviewing 'next and/or previous' lessons

The Reading Recovery organization is spending a lot of money to defend itself. It hired a consulting firm to design a campaign to rebut Sold a Story, and it filed a lawsuit against its home state of Ohio.

'Roughly half of the city’s students in grades 3-8 are not considered proficient in reading, according to state tests.' Yet, some schools in NYC don't want to change.

I don't get it.

Ambulance: So you are not going to pay?

Her (angrily): Well, we are going to send her to collections then.

Me: Ok… but do you think she cares?

Yep, Uri Berliner is spot on about NPR: 'politics were blotting out the curiosity..that ought to have been driving our work'

I was invited to be on All Things Considered April 2021 but became uninvited after stating kids shouldn't mask during sports🧵
