The student press’ coverage of the pro Gaza protests couldn’t be more different than the craven stenography of the mainstream media

Students & faculty at campuses like Emory, Indiana and New York University arrested for taking part in pro-Palestine camps have been charged with 'criminal trespass' despite working & studying in the spaces they're alleged to have trespassed on npr.org/2024/05/01/124…

The comment by Columbia's President Shafik (& ex IMF official) that puts 'damaging property' ahead of the entirely legitimate right to protest is just about the clearest statement I've seen of the priorities & complicity of today's universities columbiaspectator.com/news/2024/05/0…

This is the current The Guardian headline. If you describe the mobilisation of hundreds of riot cops, use of specialist lifting equipment & arrest & zip-tieing of student occupiers on a university campus 'entry' and 'dispersal', you're really not much of a journalist Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine

If you're just waking up in the UK, this is what happened at Columbia last night - vast numbers of police arresting pro-Palestinian students occupying their own campus because they want to stop genocide. Will the headlines still be about antisemitism? Solidarity to Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine

Revealing that The New York Times subheading 'Antisemitism on Campus' (which was used to report on the pro-Gaza protests at Columbia) has now been replaced by 'Campus Protests' - presumably because there just wasn't enough evidence to sustain it.

The usual playbook - repression and unwarranted accusations of anti semitism - doesn’t seem to be stopping the magnificent wave of support on US campuses for counterfire.org/article/the-wh…

Starting my research for a new book on capitalism and the media by re-reading this fantastic book. Reminded that Sinclair's aim wasn't to improve the quality of meat but to change working conditions in the meat packing plants and to challenge corporate power more generally.

'Columbia called in law enforcement' hardly does justice to the outrage of a former World Bank & IMF official & Bank of England deputy governor being in the position to demand the NYPD break up a peaceful campus demo. But then these are the people who run universities today...

Thoughtful & detailed account by @[email protected] on why the proposed job cuts at Goldsmiths speak to a much wider attack on critical and creative education. Important final sentence: “I don’t think it’s a done deal” theguardian.com/education/2024…

Given that pre-1992 jobs are also at risk, as we know all too well at Goldsmiths, there has never been a more urgent time to launch both an industrial and a political strategy to rescue higher education from those who would wreck it timeshighereducation.com/news/research-…

There wasn't a single UK front-page photo of over the weekend despite being exactly 6 months & 30,000+ deaths after 7/10. Actually, that's not true: the Sunday Telegraph did feature Maureen Lipman describing criticism of Israel as 'close to fascism' lrb.co.uk/blog/2024/apri…

I wrote this for London Review of Books on the dehumanisation of Palestinians in in UK newspaper front page photographs. I found only a tiny handful of images in which Palestinians were named. Israelis, on the other hand, do not face the same treatment... lrb.co.uk/blog/2024/apri…

The IDF has killed some 10,000 people in in 2024 & yet the Times hasn't had one front page in that time featuring a photo of even a single Palestinian victim. And that remains the case today.
