The Post Office's top priority is covering-up its mistakes. Thread on what happened when we identified that the Post Office's compensation payments to thousands of postmasters were a tax disaster.

“While we may record handing people a leaflet or dictating another number to ring as a satisfactory conclusion to our ‘front-door process’ (‘no further action’, ‘involvement ended..)we’re effectively saying off you go, you’re on your own, start again..”

‘Over salt beef I brood on the need to review this Jewish deli’. This week’s restaurant column: Freddie’s deli, Hampstead, a great addition to London’s non-kosher Jewish offering. With a segue into the Israel-Hamas conflict. Hence comments are closed. theguardian.com/food/2024/mar/…

I think that the collective hailing of co-production as the 'gold standard' does a disservice to it.

Co-production can be great - but it's only great when it's done well, authentically, & kindly.

There's no shame in using other participatory approaches, just call it what it is.

Lynn Laidlaw (she/her) Shaun Treweek Jeremy Taylor NIHR Involvement It is also important to look at any other limiting factors. A really important area is the true inclusion of those with disabilities. The default model of “choose zoom” needs to be challenged.

The theory of volunteer management has a lot to offer to all aspects of PPIE.

Lynn Laidlaw (she/her) Shaun Treweek Jeremy Taylor NIHR Involvement The model of reimbursement can never be truly inclusive if it requires paying out in advance for large ish sums.

For the majority of the population, this is an unrealistic and unfair expectation which leads to the selection of unrepresentative groups of contributors.

Lynn Laidlaw (she/her) Shaun Treweek Jeremy Taylor NIHR Involvement In particular, it is about accepting that individuals are entitled to benefit from their contribution e.g through gaining skills, socialising etc.

It values individuality and team work.

People engaging in research should be able to always benefit beyond that of “reimbursement”

Jeremy Taylor Lynn Laidlaw (she/her) NIHR Involvement There’s an entire complex system upholding barriers to achieving this commitment.

Usually, organisations tackle payment/reward head on as if it is the issue rather than a symptom. And, from my perspectives, that’s why it is still an issue.

Jeremy Taylor Lynn Laidlaw (she/her) NIHR Involvement I was at PPI meeting a few weeks ago (as was Lynn Laidlaw (she/her)) and the issue of payment, especially linked to benefits and inclusion of socioeconomically disadvantaged public contributors came up a lot as a substantial problem to inclusive research design.

Thanks Jeremy Taylor. I wonder if you need to do some research to discover the scale of the problems? It also impacts on researchers and PPIE leads who spend considerable time trying to navigate inflexible systems on our behalf.

Chuffed to be part of this fantastic community. It’s been a great year and the impact has been as much in the journey working together as the outcomes of what we have achieved.
