“What is climate finance? Dunno. But we’re definitely providing 100bn of it”.

There is money, plenty of it, just not for climate action.
Let's get the foundations right that could guide us in navigating the gridlock of climate finance

New blog in which I explore how changes in reporting have exaggerated upwards trend in climate finance, using NLP tools that Alex Miller has very patiently been teaching me:

Upshot: CF would have been much higher in the past if measured by today's standards

As COP28 concludes today, I reflect on
*relying on market solutions when, in the first place, we are where we're b.c of greed and consumerism;
*the rush to offset rather than cut emissions
*the disregard to differentiated transition
* the broken international financial system

It’s a wrap for me at COP 28 as week two starts today. Despite slow progress in negotiations, I hope that this COP will live up to its promise to ‘Unite. Act. Deliver’. If you are still in Dubai and would like to engage with us, please get in touch with my colleague Martha G. Bekele

Powerful voices today at this event: Liane Schalatek, Titi Gbemisola Akosa, Stephanie Eyram Akrumah and Ndivile Mokoena .My key takeaway:there should be data on how much finance is reaching women at local level. If you don’t know how much there is you cannot apply accountability!

I've since learnt that the COP28 Presidency donated the space and pan African institutions paid for the fitting.
In future COPs, can African members consider to have a big (umbrella) hub for all African stakeholders?

The 3 key messages from Africans COP28 UAE
1. Cut emissions (focus less on offsets!); 2. Adaption as the number one priority; & 3. Work out the operationalisation framework of L&D funding lest we've similar challenges as other mechanisms -insufficiency, inefficiency & inequity.

Strengthen data systems if the desired outcome is for women to be counted to count.
Plan climate action for women, by women and with women using reliable and timely data.
These were the two strong messages from Mariam Ibrahim at the COP28 UAE on gender and environment data.

At safeguarding the *just* in JETP (Just Energy Transition Partnerships), Crispian Olver reminded us all the global financial architecture is not working for climate financing esp., for Africa. He says what we have is *elite multilateralism*!
