A blank space on today’s WSJ A1 where Evan Gershkovich’s reporting should be, one year after his arrest on patently false charges. Russia should free him now

'Putin conferred with the leaders of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Syria, Azerbaijan and Tajikistan — an apparent nod to the Islamic State’s claim of responsibility even as Putin & Kremlin-controlled media have pointed fingers at Ukraine.' Mary Ilyushina washingtonpost.com/world/2024/03/…

Amazing whataboutism from Putin regarding Alexei Navalny’s death:

“As for Mr. Navalny. Yes, he passed away. This is always a sad event. We have had other cases where people died in prison. Doesn’t that ever happen in the USA?” he said.

❗️Putin for the first time called Navalny by name is a public speech during a visit to his campaign headquarters, saying that he had agreed to a prisoner swap that would see the opposition leader free on condition that Navalny would never return to Russia.

My best friend Evan is on the cover of Time magazine. Evan is a top-notch journalist who always wanted to tell the story, instead of becoming it. But the Russian authorities decided otherwise when they arrested him on false charges almost a year (!) ago. It's time to get him out

I saw his hearse & his coffin. I saw thousands of Russians paying him their last respects. But it’s still hard to believe that Alexei Navalny is dead. Among his supporters there's disbelief & defiance. Our report from Moscow. Producer Liza Camera anton chicherov & team

It appears that the memorial service for Alexei Navalny was cut short - in this clip posted by RusNews mourners can be heard pleading with wardens to keep the coffin open and let the remaining few dozen people inside the church to say goodbyes - but it was shut.

New video appeal from Navalny’s mother: “They are blackmailing me, setting conditions on where and how Alexey should be buried.”
“The investigators claim that they have the cause of death ready, they have all the medical and legal documents ready.”

.Mary Ilyushina on despair over Navalny's death: “I hoped to return to that 'Beautiful Russia of the Future' Navalny always dreamed of” said Alina. “Now I don’t think I’ll ever return to my homeland & I feel that Putin & his legacy will outlive us all”

Found this clip of people chanting “Yulia! Yulia!” the day Alexei and Yulia Navalnaya landed in Moscow Sheremetyevo airport after his treatment in Berlin. Three years later, Alexei is dead and Yulia announced that she is determined to continue his fight.
