And the interesting answer is that it's John Noel, the team photographer, who rarely appeared in any group photos. It may have been taken by a Sherpa or a Gurkha officers, or with a remote shutter release.

The answer is Hingston the team doctor, top row next to Somervell. He wasn't in the first team photos because he took Bruce back to Sikkim. But who is the other, bottom row, between Norton and Odell?

The poignant thing about the first pic is that Mallory and Irvine are not in it. What's interesting though is that there are still 9 people. So who are the others?

'Because it's there' was only popularised after Mallory's disappearance, when the New York Times went back to previous interviews and decided that it was Mallory's most quotable line. In 1923 the headline was 'Climbing Mount Everest is work for Supermen'

In the 1923 article, 'Because it's there' was not the headline. The fake version of article pops up in documentaries but it's a mock up not the original. For the story behind at the interview, Fallen available from tomorrow in the UK, May 6 in US.
