I very rarely share fundraising links.

This is one of my family’s students. I am completely lost & overwhelmed by the entire Gaza nightmare, but this is a way to throw money at a tiny part of it to literally save lives:

If we could not use badly trained and inaccurate AI images to depict disaster impacts in media, I would be so happy.

There's plenty of footage and stills out there of real earthquakes impacting areas. No need to fake it with AI and give people wildly inaccurate info.

What better way is there to get prepped for tomorrow's eclipse than to learn more about our friendly neighborhood moon? Listen to this week's Radiolab episode, 'The Moon Itself': link.chtbl.com/radiolab?sid=t…

Do you know more or less than you think you do about the moon?

I did a thing! radiolab.org/podcast/the-mo…

It is ridiculous and chaotic and fun. The scraps left on the cutting room floor for my corner of this are extensive and just as bonkers as what made it into the episode. 😆

Ehem, now that everyone is talking about the aftershock forecasts, I get to discuss a part of science that rarely gets discussed: STATISTICAL SEISMOLOGY! I love working with these math whiz kids who apply their skills in math, earthquakes, and history to build the forecasts.

Northeasterners, it’s your time to shine for geos!

We rarely have felt reports from your area, and they’re so important for understanding the impact of surficial geology & buildings on lived experience.

Go on, fill it out. Null reports also help!

Well, I hope you’re planning to tailgate with our eclipse bender brand new episode dropping early Friday morning, all about the overlooked “star” of the eclipse.

A mystery still remains, 60 years later. Can you help us solve it? The footage in this film is the only footage we know existing of an underwater landslide triggering a tsunami in a fjord. Its blurry but devastating to watch. And we know more footage exists. Please share 1/

I'M GIVING THE USGS PUBLIC LECTURE THIS MONTH!

Sorry for the shouty text, I'm just really excited and honored to have this opportunity to represent social science and natural hazards (specifically earthquakes and ShakeAlert) at the USGS. Please share!

I need to acknowledge our director of grad studies Gregory Samanez-Larkin for treating all students—current, past, accepted, & rejected—with the kindness that academia can so sadly lack. He’s going viral on Reddit for his thoughtful rejection letters, & I hope other programs follow suit.

The offer of a lifeboat to Bluesky is perpetually open at Mineral Cup #MinCup. We have a stockpile of donated invite codes to keep shuffling people who enjoy playful science to somewhere with a different vibe.

Observed uplift (L: Before earthquake, R: After earthquake) at Wajima Fishing Port ~30km from the epicentre of the M7.6 earthquake at Noto Peninsula Japan; The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan now estimate this site experienced up to ~4m of uplift

Thanks to the enthusiasm of geo-fans already on Bluesky who miss you, we still have a nice stockpile to invite you across.

Bluesky is much smaller and has its own glitches, but if you’re trying to mitigate, we’re using the Mineral Cup #MinCup account for code distribution.

(My replies are a spammy mess.)

How do you keep Earth a cube once you’ve chiselled its faces off?

Mika McKinnon: I'd recommend we come up with, like, an Earth-sized pair of Spanx to shove it in.

@downhereonearth: I like the idea of shapewear but the shape is a cube.
