The Mill Valley Library has joined the growing number of libraries nationwide that have recognized fines as a form of social inequity and has gone fine free. Patrons will no longer be charged fines for returning materials late.

Beverly Cleary's simple idea — to write about the kids in her own neighborhood — ensured that her books have never gone out of print.

Cleary died Thursday in Carmel, Calif. She was 104 years old.
